On October 8, 2023 history was made at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
Kelvin Kiptum, 24 years of age, set the new World Record for the marathon distance (42.2km) stopping the clock at a remarkable 2 hours 00 minutes 35 seconds.

I feel honored to have been able to share that course with him that day. I remember when I was at the halfway point of the marathon and the course volunteers announced to all that passed an aid station that Kelvin had broke the Marathon World Record. Everyone cheered because we all knew the accomplishment. News of Kelvin's achievement dominated the news cycle and the running community. Amazing! Especially for a man of his age.
With sponsorship deals rolling in and the World Marathon Majors inviting him to events, I think everyone in the running world was positive he'd continue to amaze.
Sadly, the news came in yesterday Kelvin Kiptum and his coach passed away in a traffic accident. This came as a shock to so many athletes, runners, and his fans. Such a devastating loss on all accounts.
Though I didn't know him personally, our paths did cross a few months ago in Chicago, and I wanted to take this moment to honor him and give you (reader) an introduction to a legend. You can read more about him in this article by Time Magazine.
